These structures were formed in wet mud which then dried out on the edge of an oxbow lake.
  • Identify the structures.
  • Look carefully at the edges of the structures: what is the 3-D shape of the mud fragments?

  • In the bottom right hand corner, some of the mud fragments have been moved by wind or current activity. Mud flakes are commonly found as transported fragments in sedimentary rocks.

Scale: small divisions on top part of scale are centimetres.
