This page serves as an an entrance to the short virtual field trips developed for the FILTER project. The field trips will be used individually or in combination as parts of learning resources for particular courses.

Each virtual field trip is a 'one-stop trip', taking the reader to a single locality or a couple of related localities
On each field trip, we look at six images of the sediments and sedimentary rocks on a range of scales, normally starting from the broad view, and zooming in progressively through more detailed views, down to microscope images
The images are the most important element, but complementary text and interactive quizzes are provided to help in understanding the images
The six basic images may themselves be viewed at three different sizes, to allow the user to see sufficient detail
Sometimes further images have been added to provide additional information: for example, scrolling panoramas of localities, or photomicrographs in both plane- and cross-polarized light
Level: the web pages are intended for use in introductory to intermediate level in degree courses in geology, physical geography, environmental sciences, ecology and related disciplines

N.B. The large images are typically 200-300 kb in size, and may load slowly.

Using the templates

Clicking on the pink thumbnail image above will enable you to navigate around the linked templates
This shell could be used for any subject or case study where studying images at different magnifications is important: either a single image seen at different resolutions or, as in most of the above examples, related images at different scales
You may download the templates as a zip file. Save the zip file, then open it using Winzip or a similar program
You may then edit the files in an html editor such as Netscape Composer, Dreamweaver, Frontpage, inserting your own images and text into the linked pages

In the examples above, each image has been saved in 3 resolutions: large (~1500 pixels max. dimension), medium (600 pixels) and thumbnail (100 pixels)

Hint - if you give your files the same names as the placeholder images in the templates, you will not need to change any of the links. The names should be:
- for the thumbnails, thumb01.jpg to thumb06.jpg
- for the medium size images, image01.jpg to image06.jpg
- for the large images, image01-big.jpg to image06-big.jpg
