In this photo against the light, the method of propagation of the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle may be seen. Seedlings with leaves and roots form on the tree, then drop into the soil or water below the branches. They may root on the spot, or be carried by waves or currents and root elsewhere. Many do not survive. A seedling is arrowed.
