Devonian 'marble' quarries
The image shows a disused marble quarry at Caunes-Minervois, in the Languedoc region of southern France. From this quarry, the columns for the Grand Trianon at Versailles were extracted. In the foreground is one of the columns which broke during extraction. The 'marbles' here are mid-Devonian red micritic limestones containing Stromatactis cavities, infilled with white calcite. |
