This is a view of Mount Rainier, a large stratovolcano in Washington State in the northwest USA. The photograph is taken from Orting, looking southeastwards towards the ice- and snow-covered volcano, which is 4392 metres (14,410 feet) high. The flat surface in the foreground represents the top of the Electron Mudflow, a large valley-filling deposit which flowed from Mount Rainier about 500 years ago. Rainier is a continuing threat to the Seattle-Tacoma area. |
