full-size image

Polished section through part of a colony of the tabulate coral Favosites sp.

  • The vertical structures are the edges of the narrow corallites produced by the small individual coral polyps

  • The horizontal structures are the tabulae, marking successive positions of the top of the corallite as it built up

  • Think about the structure of this coral, and look at the samples in the lab. Was this colony adapted to live in low or high energy conditions?

Scale: see scale bar.
