Corals in quarry

In this detail of the quarry walls, the method of exploitation can be seen. Closely spaced vertical holes were drilled through the rock from above. Wedges were slowly driven into the holes, until the block of limestone split away from the quarry wall.

Large coral heads are exposed here: the radiating corallites may be seen.

Scale: small divisions on left of scale are centimetres.
