A glaciated rock surface showing striations (scratches) produced by rock fragments dragged along at the base of the ice. The surface is overlain by the poorly sorted deposit of the glacier (till) in the cliff on the right.

  • The striations are aligned parallel to the ice flow. What was the direction of flow?
  • Note that there are two possible flow directions parallel to the striations - towards bottom right or towards top left. We cannot easily tell which was the true direction.
