This marl (a fine-grained calcareous mudstone) contains interesting structures.

  • Each structure is a cube with hollow faces.
  • These cubes are now made of sediment. They are pseudomorphs replacing crystals of a soluble mineral.
  • This mineral was halite. What is the chemical composition of halite, and what does its presence tell us about the conditions when this rock was formed?
